The Ivatan are the native people of these islands, and their thick-walled stone houses answer the weather directly. Limestone and coral under layered cogon-grass roofs, in two forms: the maytuab with its four-sloped roof, the sinadumparan with two.
Against wind and sun the women wear the vakul and the men the talugung, headgear woven from the fiber of the voyavoy palm.
